Staining on the Staining Grid is reported as a percentage of staining AREA of the cornea. From the eye care practitioners point of view one of the most difficult aspects of interpreting this study is to determine how clinically significant are the various staining percentages reported. Few will argue that a 73% staining area is acceptable. But, what about a staining area of 36%, 18%, or even 7%? The color-coding system (red/yellow/green zones) utilized on this site translates a grid full of percentages into a useful tool for your practice at a single glance. View Photo Gallery Slide Show

Another useful "tool" is photographs showing the actual staining observed with the various lens/solution combinations. All photos were captured using a Haag/Streit BQ900 slit lamp mounted with an ExwaveHAD 3CCD analog color video camera. A cobalt and Wratten #12 (yellow) filter and Eyecap image management software were also used.

We have put together a slide show of corneal staining photos of various lens/solution combinations tested in our study. Photos are representive of the AVERAGE staining found with each combination - not a "worst case" scenario. Photos were recorded at various magnifications showing portions of the cornea exhibiting significant staining. We have tried to include many of the combinations tested although the emphasis is on highly staining combinations. Click on this link to view the Photo Gallery Slide Show.

Photos Examples of Various Staining Amounts
The 4 links below display photo examples of lens/solution combinations falling within various amounts (color zones) of staining. These are provided to help you visualize and understand the range of solution-induced staining which may be encountered and the clinical significance of this staining.
Absence of Staining (Green Zone) Examples

Insignificant Staining (Green Zone) Examples

Moderate Staining (Yellow Zone) Examples

Excessive Staining (Red Zone) Examples
